in their field. Beyond their work, however, they were heavily
involved in
Scientific Spiritualism
(Espiritismo Científico), an underground movement that attempted
to bridge the gap between science and the paranormal. Followers
believed that souls, spirits, and even extraterrestrial beings
could be understood through hidden electromagnetic frequencies
and that electronic devices could be used to communicate with
them. Together with their friend
Élcio Correia Gomes, the two men conducted a number of unusual experiments using
homemade electronic equipment in an attempt to detect or
communicate with these unseen phenomena.
On 17 August 1966, Viana and Cruz left Campos dos Goytacazes,
telling their families they were travelling to
Niterói
to purchase electronic materials for work. After arriving that
afternoon, they bought two waterproof coats and stopped at a
local bar, where they purchased a bottle of mineral water. The
waitress later recalled that Miguel appeared unusually nervous
and repeatedly checked his watch. Shortly afterwards, the two
men left the area and were never seen alive again.
On the afternoon of 20 August 1966, a young boy flying a kite on Vintém Hill discovered the bodies of two men lying in a clearing. He immediately alerted the authorities, but the steep and rugged terrain made access difficult. A team of police officers and firefighters eventually reached the site the following day. The two men were found lying side by side, partially covered by grass. Each was dressed in a formal suit, wore a heavy waterproof raincoat despite the dry weather, and had a homemade eye mask cut from lead placed over their faces. Investigators found no visible signs of violence, no evidence of a struggle, and nothing to immediately explain their deaths. Near the bodies, police recovered an empty bottle of mineral water, a packet containing two wet towels, and a small notebook bearing a handwritten message that read: "16:30 be at the specified location. 18:30 ingest capsules, after the effect protect metals await signal mask." Although many of the men's personal belongings remained untouched, investigators noted that a substantial amount of cash they had reportedly carried with them was missing.
